Sumanto Chowdhury – Cow

Sumanto Chowdhury is a Hyderabad-based artist who has been working here for the last 10 years. He was born in West Bengal and studied B.F.A. from Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. In 2004, he came to Hyderabad and joined S.N. School, University of Hyderabad for a Masters degree. By 2006, he had completed his M.F.A. in printmaking. For further learning, Sumanto Chowdhury worked under the famous Indian contemporary painter, Laxma Goud. He believes that Laxma Goud is the reason behind his mastery.

Sumanto Chowdhury paintings transport you on a stroll through the winding alleyways of small-town India. Brightly-colored houses huddle along narrow lanes, surrounded by trees, grass and rocks. The charming mixed-media paintings, currently on display at Artworld, combine color pencils, watercolors and acrylics, etching and lithography to create a uniquely-layered, 3D effect. The artist adds that he enjoys working on landscapes and cityscapes, as well as miniatures. He finds great satisfaction in painting them vibrantly. In addition to painting, he also creates sculptures with fiberglass and wood.

Sumanto Chowdhury’s canvases reflect the beauty of rural, urban, and suburban landscapes. His paintings depict the natural surroundings of his childhood in West Bengal as well as the cityscape of Hyderabad which he is currently attracted to. Each painting by Sumanto is imbued with symbolism; colors like pink, blue, red, yellow, and emerald green convey different moods throughout the day. His interest in Indian miniature painting has greatly influenced his works. Detail of every image, both for the interior and exterior, reveals the narrative tendency of the artist. Stylistically, his works are semi-realistic. The unique part of his landscapes is the absence of human beings. By looking at the images, one can feel their presence only. The wide angle view of the landscape and the endless sky give a thrill to the viewer’s eye.
